Random Turkish proverb:

The Beetle

wbcrest
The Bug is officially a 1968 Beetle, although he contains parts ranging from 1959 to 1973. Back in college, I brought a very sick (and not the good kind) Super Pig to a friend of a friend in Zearing, Iowa for repair. That was the beginning of a long, strange, and rewarding trip that resulted in enough adventures to fill a novel, and some new friends whom I miss deeply. I'll write that book someday - with all the near-death experiences, blue highways, evil spirits, landlocked transatlantic sea captains, banjo-playing, sailing, etc. Someday...

It sounds pompous, but truly those outside the vintage VW community cannot appreciate that these vehicles are as much about the wonderful people you meet along the way as they are about the incredible rush you get from driving a piece of automotive history.

Linda continues to tolerate it, much like she does me. Like a child, my Bug needs constant attention, and gets constant love. So I choose to think of by old Bug as more than a car, it's a member of our family.

The Bug has inspired a lot of artwork as well for me. I managed to scrounge up a few old tape players (he pre-dates CD and iPod interfaces in cars), which you can check out on the Artwork->Tape Covers page.
